The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, officially putting an end to the Revolutionary War. The Treaty was ratified by Congress in 1784. The Treaty was negotiated for the U.S. by John Jay, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin.
The Treaty recognized the independence of the U.S., and marked the boundaries of the new nation. In addition, there were nine articles accompanying the Treaty that outlined certain rights, such as certain fishing rights, restored the property and rights of the Loyalists, allowed the creditors of each country to be able to be paid by the citizens of the other countries, and opened up the Mississippi River to both countries. The last thing the Treaty did was provide for the evacuation of all the British forces. The new United States now contained all the land from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Mississippi River, except for New Orleans and Florida. The new Northern border was set at the Great Lakes and along the frontiers of Nova Scotia and Quebec.
