The Greene family was from Rhode Island, they were Quakers that helped found the colony itself. Greene had no military experience, so he taught himself the military history and procedures, later rising to the rank of General.
Greene was a friend of George Washington and was made commander of a force of 1600 soldiers in Rhode Island. His close relationship to Washington afforded him quick advancement through the ranks and appointments in the Army. Greene commanded troops throughout the south and worked to drive Cornwallis out of the Carolinas and back toward Virginia in 1781. Greene worked to boost the morale of his troops, even though they were inferior in numbers to the British troops. Greene was unable to destroy the British forces, but he was able to weaken them a great deal.
