Powers that you have:
1. The Right to Vote
2. The Right to run for office
3. The Right to personal space
4. The Right to Free Speech (within limits)
5. The Right to choose your job, where to live, car to drive, etc.
Powers within households:
-frequently changing (births, deaths, marriages)
-next generation is raised (socialization)
-assumption of a pattern of gender relations
-insiders and outsiders concept (we are family)
Powers between People:
-ethnic groups and minorities within a country
-hierarchy of groups
-difficult and complex mixture of cultural phenomena
Power and Class (Karl Marx):
-fundamental conflict between capital and labor
-economic production (the bourgeoisie own capital and buy the labor of the proletariat)
-Power and the State:
-the state is the locus of formal power
-the arena of politics
What Power does the State have?
1. Can put you in jail
2. Money
3. Taxes
4. Military, police state
