Classic Antiquity--300 AD
Late Antiquity--ca. 300-600 AD
Early Middle Ages--ca. 600-1000 AD
High or Central Middle Ages--ca. 1000-1300 AD
Late Middle Ages--ca. 1300-1500 AD
The Middle Ages of Europe were not the Dark Ages, for all intents and purposes they were very successful (means of organization, economics, etc.)
Francesco Petrarch invented the concept of the Middle Ages, he considered his life period a new age of light after a period of great darkness, and the period before his was dark, in other words the Middle Ages.
